“Next,” innovative paintings by Bob Douglas, will be on display at the Wailoa Center Fountain Gallery during the month of October.
There will be a reception for the artist from 5-8 p.m. Friday in conjunction with the Main Gallery displays. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and entertainment provided by the Big Island Ukulele Guild.
“As the title suggests, this exhibit is the next step in my journey,” said Douglas, a longtime resident of the Big Island and photographer. “I have long admired the works James Turrell and Robert Irwin. They are absolute masters at controlling and shaping light, creating very strong, reflective and emotive works of art. So, the question in my mind was can my current abstract work be somehow melded with light and can this light add a new depth and quality to my paintings.
“This led me to test different light sources, color temperatures and intensities all projected through various types of acrylic media incorporated into the painting itself.”
Douglas took the approach of exploring and developing new techniques while allowing his emotions to express themselves free form.
“I guess I feel like a child with a room full of artist’s materials,” he said. “My latest paintings integrate geometric acrylic sculptural elements with LED back-lighting into abstract paintings. The purity and quality of the light adds an atmosphere not possible with paint alone.”
